Overview

The Otway Basin is approximately 500 km long and extends from Cape Jaffa in South Australia to northwest Tasmania, both onshore and offshore. Beach holds exploration licences in the Penola Trough in the southeast of South Australia. It has been explored for hydrocarbons (oil and gas) for over 100 years.

Beach is the permit holder of Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) 494 and a number of petroleum production (PPL) and retention licences (PRL), including PPL62 to the south of Penola where it operates the Katnook Gas Processing Facility (KGPF). Please refer to ‘More information’ for maps showing Beach’s permit areas in the region.

Beach operates while maintaining the highest health, safety, and environmental standards. To meet our requirements under the Energy Resources Regulations Act 2000 and Energy Resources Regulations Act 2013, Beach has revised its Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and associated Statement of Environmental Objectives (SEO) for its drilling, completions and well testing activities (well activities) in the SA Otway Basin.

The EIR describes the proposed well activities, the environment in which these activities are to be undertaken, presents an assessment of the potential impacts of these activities on the environment and identifies how potential impacts are to be managed. The result of the impact assessment is the establishment of environmental objectives to be achieved in carrying out the permitted activities and the criteria that will be used to assess Beach’s performance and these are set out in the SEO, along with Beach’s reporting requirements. A summary of the environmental impact events and associated objectives is provided in 'More information'.

EIR’s and SEO's are typically prepared for separate phases of the petroleum lifecycle, including drilling activities. EIR’s and SEO's must be accepted by the Minister for Energy and Mining, and this is delegated to the Department for Mining and Energy (DEM). EIRs and DEOs must be reviewed every 5 years.

We would like to hear your comments and feedback regarding Beach’s revised SEO and EIR.

Beach will take into consideration all feedback, including any elements of the environment that stakeholders regard as having particular value or significance. All the views, concerns or objections raised will be considered in the assessment of environmental impacts associated with the proposed activities, and Beach will explore measures to reduce any impacts and risks.

Following this consultation period, Beach will finalise and submit for assessment the updated SEO and EIR to DEM, which will include all feedback received by Beach through this consultation period.
